The pre-screening embargo has been lifted and the reviews are starting to come in, and the results aren’t looking too good. Not that I’m the least bit surprised.
Fox’s run on the X-Men has been one disappointment after the other. So, this last opportunity to squeeze money from the fanbase isn’t at all surprising. I’m sure the movie has a tepid, meandering plot with bland, unstable characters. Hell, since Magneto is in the previews saying typical Magneto things, I suspect the script will try to anchor itself to the wash-rinse-repeat plot of Magneto trying to find a peaceful life until he’s drawn out again like we’ve seen in every movie that wasn’t First Class.
What Fox and Simon Kinberg just can’t grasp is the depth of the X-Men and why and how Chris Claremont’s Dark Pheonix Saga (1980) had such an impact. Oh, and I’m willing to bet money that the Shi’ar aren’t in this movie so the alien presence that we’ll see, unfortunately, won’t be the Shi’ar Majestrix, Lilandra, nor her Imperial Guard but rather some made up ridiculousness.
That’s pretty much all I’m going to say for now. I’ll have my commentary out this weekend with comparisons to the source material and the other movie properties.
